Marinus Bies (1894-1975) - Kerk

Marinus Bies (1894-1975) - Kerk

This atmospheric and characterful painting portrays a picturesque little church with a slender, pointed tower, situated in a rural setting. The artist has created a particularly serene and somewhat melancholic atmosphere with loose, powerful brushwork and a harmonious color palette of warm reddish-brown, deep greens, and soft grays. The characteristic church building, with its high pointed-arch windows and dark roof, forms the focal point of the composition and stands nicely against the light, cloudy sky. A few dark figures near the entrance add a subtle human element to the scene and enhance the sense of scale and depth. Notably, the expressive, impasto painting technique has the architectural details rendered with a few decisive brushstrokes. The warm brick tones contrast beautifully with the cool green-blue nuances in the roof and the sky. The painting breathes the calm and simplicity of traditional village life and provides a striking portrayal of the picturesque charm of a historic church building. Executed in oil on panel Dimensions of the work c. 31 × 49 cm; with frame c. 49 × 67 cm. Provenance: private collection, F. de V., Eindhoven. Artist biography Marinus Bies (Aarle-Rixtel, 1894–1975), full name Martinus Johannes Bies, was a Dutch painter and draftsman whose oeuvre is closely tied to the Brabant landscape, and in particular the Peel. He studied under Arnold Marc Gorter and Jan Kruysen and developed a powerful, freely painted visual language in which landscape, color, and atmosphere are central. From 1933 he worked as a professional artist. In 1938 and 1939 Bies participated in group exhibitions; during this period the Van Abbemuseum acquired a Peel landscape by him. His work was subsequently also exhibited at the Rijksmuseum. On the occasion of his hundredth birth year, Museum Kempenland Eindhoven organized a retrospective in 1994 around his oeuvre. In 2025, his fiftieth death anniversary in the Peel region was commemorated with a series of exhibitions focusing on his landscape art.
