MAROT (Clément). The Works. The contents of which are as follows: *L'Adolescence Clementine*. *The Sequel to L'Adolescence*. *Two Books of Epigrams*. *The First and Second Books of Ovid’s *Metamorphoses*. Substantially expanded. The whole has been arranged by him differently and more skillfully than before. Paris, Denys Janot, 1548 (1544). Six parts in one in-16 volume (113 x 75 mm), contemporary binding in fawn calfskin, double fillet framing and a central fleur-de-lis cold-stamped on the covers with gilt fleur-de-lis in the corners, the inscription “PAZL” accompanied by the date “1659” cold-stamped in the following century on the front cover, ribbed spine adorned with gilt fleur-de-lis, marbled edges. Collation: a8; B4; C-N8; O4; Aa-Qq8; Aaa-Eee8; Aaaa-Iiii8; A-F8; AB-CD8; A-L8. 504 leaves: 4 unnumbered preliminary leaves; 108 numbered folios (Adolescence Clémentine); 128 numbered folios (Sequel to Adolescence); 40 numbered folios (Epigrams); 72 folios erroneously numbered 82 (Ovid’s Metamorphoses); 48 numbered folios (The Story of Leander and Hero); 16 unnumbered folios (Enfer et Estraines); 88 numbered folios (Psalms). One of only two surviving complete copies of this extremely rare edition, and the only one in private hands. Unknown to Berthon and other Marot bibliographers, it joins the copy held at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, formerly the Turquety copy (1868, no. 51). The edition was most likely printed in 1544, the year indicated on the individual title pages of the various sections. It is “one of the last printed by Denis Janot, who died at the end of the year” (Berthon), but it must nevertheless predate the so-called “Rocher” edition published that same year, as it still follows the traditional divisions of the text (Adolescence, Epigrams, Metamorphoses...) rather than the organization of the pieces by genre—a system introduced by that later edition and which would be used consistently thereafter. As in the ENSB copy (see Berthon, who reproduces the title page), the last digit of the date 1544 appearing on the title page was altered in pen, changed to an 8 in our copy and to a 7 in the ENSB copy. There is therefore no copy that has preserved the original date of 1544 intact; Janot’s death may have delayed the publication of the edition.¹ This third edition published by Denis Janot—following those of 1537 and 1538 —follows the same editorial structure as the major Gryphe-Dolet edition of 1538—the first to bear the title *Œuvres*—but is expanded upon that edition to include, in addition to the *Second Book of Ovid’s Metamorphoses*, *The Story of Leander and Hero*, the Fifty-Two Psalms of David, as well as *L’Enfer* and *Les Etrennes*, a section of sixteen unnumbered folios (the last one blank) bound here between *L’Histoire* and the *Psalms*—all pieces not mentioned on the title page. The translation of the Psalms—a section published separately when included in editions of the *Œuvres*—was appended here in the edition printed by Pierre Trepperel in Angers in 1547, an edition known only from this single copy. The son of Jean II Trepperel, this printer—who was related to the Janot family—is documented in Angers in 1545, then in Orléans beginning in August 1547. A supporter of the Calvinists, he was massacred during the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. The edition is remarkably illustrated with 42 woodcut vignettes within the text (39 different subjects); some are archaic in style, but most are in a very beautiful Renaissance style, delicately executed in line art. These vignettes had already been used in Janot’s first two editions of Marot’s works. Denis Janot’s mark appears on the verso of the last leaf of *The Story of Leander and Hero*. A very fine copy, perfectly preserved in a lovely period binding, in exceptionally rare condition. The spine is rubbed and skillfully restored, as are the corners. There is slight marginal water stain on four leaves of the first quire. Old ink inscriptions on the endpapers. 1- There appears to be a third copy of this edition, incomplete by six leaves, which appeared in the De Backer sale (I, 1926, no. 24). This copy, dated 1548 according to the catalog, is the only one mentioned by Tchemerzine and Meyer, who believed it to be the sole existing copy. Apart from the fact that the Psalms were added in the edition published by Etienne Groulleau, Janot’s successor, in 1549, and that the 16 folios containing *Enfer* and *Etrennes* were bound between *Adolescence* and its sequel, its description and collation, provided in detail, correspond in every respect to ours (“even the same pagination error in *La Métamorphose*, for example,” notes Berthon). However, curiously, the edition is listed in the catalog as printed “in italic type.” According to Berthon (1548/7), this could be a reprint with a revised general title
