Marvin Blackmore (20/21st century) Navajo Polychrome Lidded Pottery Jar. Pottery jar decorated inside and out with a complex etched design. Marvin Blackmore (Navajo/Diné) is a celebrated Native American ceramic artist known for his exceptionally intricate carved and etched pottery. His vessels are built upon classic thrown forms and covered with multiple layers of colored slips, which are then carefully carved and etched using a sgraffito technique to expose contrasting layers beneath. The resulting surfaces feature elaborate geometric patterns, imagery drawn from the natural world, and traditional Native American motifs. Raised in Cortez, Colorado, Blackmore was exposed early to the carved Pueblo pottery of the Southwest and the influential black-on-black pottery of Maria Martinez and her family at San Ildefonso Pueblo. His first works followed the black-on-black tradition before he developed the complex, multicolored style for which he became widely recognized. Blackmore learned the fundamentals of working with and firing clay from Navajo potter Manuel Morgan. Over time, he developed an extraordinarily labor-intensive approach to surface decoration, guided by his stated mission: “To create the most complex intricate pottery the world has ever seen. "Blackmore has worked collaboratively with family and fellow artists, including Doris and Rodney John and his eldest son, Valentino. His distinctive vessels combine traditional Southwestern pottery influences with remarkable precision, dense ornamentation, and a highly recognizable contemporary aesthetic. Ref: BD3398
