Mathematics.- Apollonius, of Perga. The Two books of Apollonius Pergæus, Concerning determinate section, as they have been restored by Willebrordus Snellius...To which are added, the same two books, by William Wales, being an entire new work, translated by John Lawson, first edition of Lawson's translation, 5 engraved plates of diagrams, title foxed and with marginal repair to lower corner, marginal worming, some staining, mostly marginal, occasional spotting, lightly browned, modern tan half calf, spine in compartments and with double red morocco labels, [ESTC T177865], 4to, Printed by G. Bigg, successor to D. Leach. And sold by B. White, in Fleet-Street; L. Davis, in Holborne; J. Nourse, in the Strand; and T. Payne, near the Mews-Gate, 1772. *** Rare at auction. It is a key work in 18th-century English geometrical reconstruction. Apollonius’s lost treatise 'De determinata sectione' survived only through descriptions in Pappus of Alexandria’s 'Collection'. Willebrord Snellius first published his Latin restoration ('Apollonius Batavus') in 1608. John Lawson later translated Snell's work into English and appended an independent restoration by William Wales, the mathematician and astronomer who served on Captain James Cook’s second voyage aboard HMS Resolution (1772–1775).
