Mathematics. He initially worked in isolation, but was later invited to Cambridge University by the mathematician G.H. Hardy, who recognised the ground-breaking nature of his work. They would go on to collaborate on papers along with John Edensor Littlewood. Ramanujan was the first Indian to be elected a fellow of Trinity College, and the second Indian to be elected a fellow of the Royal Society.
