Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. C. 1965. Likely based on memories from her first year of marriage, Maud Lewis created this cheerful scene of a couple out for a springtime drive. When Maud met Everett Lewis in 1938, he owned an old Ford Model T. Everett would take Maud out a few times a week to peddle fish from village to village. Traveling in the Model T, Maud likely explored Sandy Cove, Digby, and perhaps Smith’s Cove and Bear River—landscapes that would later serve as the inspiration for many of her vibrant paintings. This is a serial image found in the late 1950s and 1960s. In 1965 Maud Lewis was featured on CBC Television and in a Toronto Star Weekly article with the headline: "The Little Old Lady Who Paints Pretty Pictures". This example is from this strong period, when Maud began to gain national attention. A similar image is found on page 66 of "The Illuminated Life of Maud Lewis" by Lance Woolaver and Bob Brooks. Includes letter of authenticity. Signed, "Lewis", lower right. Labelled, "Framed By South West Photo, Yarmouth, N.S.", on reverse with the date of framing, "May 18/78."
