Max Jacob - Méditations Inédites - Mystique et Martyr...

Exceptional set of two autograph manuscripts of mystical Max Jacob meditations, addressed to Brigadier Pierre Lagarde in 1940. The first, titled "6h: Love of God", comes with its stamped and postmarked shipping envelope, and a period boxwood root for Palm Sunday. It is written in brown ink on a double sheet of vellum paper. “I contemplated last night the beautiful starry night, so small myself, and I felt in me the presence of Him who created all these worlds and arranged them harmoniously. I told myself that He admitted me into this prodigious harmony: why me? What goodness [...]” Dimensions: 15.7 x 24.1 cm. Condition: Paper browning with time, with a few creases and folds. Otherwise a beautiful state of conservation. See photos for more details. Number of pages: 3 pages The second titled "Love of God for us", is written in brown ink on a sheet of vellum paper. “Love God if you are not stones, if you are not mired in the mud of stupidity, dazed in the clamor of demons. Love God or He will eventually tire of you without warning and after death you will have an unexpected and terrible awakening. [...]” Dimensions: 21 x 27 cm. Condition: Small tears at the folds of sending. Otherwise a beautiful state of conservation. See photos for more details. Number of pages: 2 pages These documents come from an exceptional set of correspondences, manuscripts and notes dating from 1939-1940 by Max Jacob, a major figure of French symbolism and modernism, who was at once a poet, novelist, painter and mystic, and Pierre Lagarde, author of Max Jacob: mystic or martyr (Éditions Universitaires, 1959). They attest to a close intellectual and spiritual relationship between the two men. Pierre Lagarde, a attentive reader and faithful friend, drew from the meditations, inventions and letters that Jacob entrusted to him the very material of his work. These pieces, with a mystical and poetic reach, illustrate the direct transmission between Max Jacob’s spiritual experience and the critical interpretation Lagarde gave it. These documents are essential to understanding Jacob’s final creative period and the work undertaken by Pierre Lagarde to preserve its depth and religious dimension. - Max Jacob, born Max Jacob Alexandre on 12 July 1876 in Quimper and died 5 March 1944 in Drancy, is a French modernist poet and novelist but also a painter.
