Maximilien Luce (1858–1941) is a French painter, engraver and illustrator, a major figure of Neo-Impressionism. Close to Georges Seurat, Paul Signac and Camille Pissarro, he adopted in the 1880s the divisionist technique, characterized by a fragmented brushwork and a particularly subtle exploration of light and color. An engaged artist and attentive observer of his era, Luce draws inspiration from landscapes and urban scenes as well as from the worker and industrial world. Paris, the Seine valley, Normandy and the great industrial sites are among his favored subjects. His work, at the crossroads of Neo-Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, is today preserved in numerous public collections and sought on the art market for its pictorial quality, its luminosity and its importance in the history of French painting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
