Maya Polychrome Bowl with Stepped Scroll Panels

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Maya. A deep, round-bottomed earthenware bowl with gently curving walls that rise to a slightly thickened rim. The rim carries a band of deep red slip. Below it, cream panels are set into a warm orange ground. Each panel is framed by bold black outlines and crossed by an orange stepped band that ends in a curling scroll. Small dotted marks and short parallel strokes at the end of the band suggest a much-abstracted creature, perhaps a limb or claw, though the motif may be purely geometric. The interior is slipped a plain, even orange with root marks and manganese deposits. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 205620
