Background Information: This elongated, leaf-shaped arrowhead is attributed to the medieval period and has been associated with the era of the Crusades. Its narrow, tapering blade features a prominent central midrib, while the extended tang was designed for insertion into a wooden arrow shaft and securing with binding material. Archery played an important role in medieval warfare, hunting and personal defence. During the Crusades of the 11th–13th centuries, bows and arrows were widely employed by European and Middle Eastern forces. Archers provided ranged support during battles, sieges and defensive operations, making arrow production an important part of military equipment manufacture. Tanged arrowheads formed part of a long-established technological tradition extending from antiquity into the medieval period. Their manufacture required skilled metalworking, with the blade shape and central reinforcement designed to provide strength and effective penetration. Leaf-shaped forms were also known in earlier periods, and their precise chronology depends on typology, material and archaeological context. Arrowheads were produced in considerable quantities by specialised craftsmen and local workshops. Their widespread use reflects the importance of archery throughout medieval Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, where military campaigns and commercial contacts encouraged the exchange of equipment and manufacturing techniques.
