Medieval

Medieval

A striking wearable bronze cross pendant, traditionally associated with the devotional symbolism of the Crusader and Medieval Christian world. The cross has a strong geometric form with expanded arms and an integral suspension loop, allowing it to be worn as a pendant. Its front is distinguished by five circular bosses: one positioned at the centre and one on each of the four arms. These five elements can evocatively be interpreted within Christian devotional tradition as representing the Five Holy Wounds of Christ — the wounds of the hands and feet and the wound in Christ's side. The Five Wounds became an important symbol of Christ's Passion and sacrifice in medieval Christianity. The dark bronze surface, with green and earthy patination and areas of exposed metal, gives the cross a particularly powerful archaeological character. The reverse is undecorated, emphasizing the simplicity of its original construction. Period: Medieval / Crusader Era Object: Christian devotional cross pendant Material: Bronze Length: approx. 25.5 mm Decoration: Five circular bosses, symbolically associated with the Five Wounds of Christ Suspension: Original integral loop Condition: Ancient surface with patina, deposits and age-related wear, as visible in the photographs Presentation: Shown with a modern chain for wearable display; chain is not ancient. The compact 25.5 mm size makes this especially attractive as a wearable historical pendant, combining medieval Christian symbolism with the unmistakable character of an archaeological object.
