This object is a Burgundian belt tongue from the 15th or 16th century. Size: 7.6 x 1.9 cm Weight: 23.28 g Condition: intact A belt tongue (also called belt end or gispel) is the metal fitting attached to the end of a leather belt. It served to protect the leather from fraying, added weight so the belt hung nicely, and made it easier to thread the belt through the buckle. Material: Cast copper alloy (bronze or brass). Design: An elongated, tapering form that at the top often features openwork windows or decorative openings. Decoration: The surface is adorned with late medieval relief motifs, in this case a stylized floral- or geometric pattern.
