Background Information: This medieval bronze ring is attributed to the tradition of archery thumb rings, used to protect the thumb when drawing and releasing a bowstring. Its broad, projecting guard and substantial construction are consistent with the functional principles of this type of archery equipment. The relatively small opening may suggest use by a young archer or an individual with a slender thumb, although this cannot be established without precise measurements. During the Crusader period, from the late 11th to the 13th century, archery played an important role in warfare throughout Europe and the eastern Mediterranean. While Western European archers generally employed a finger-draw technique, thumb-draw archery was particularly associated with mounted archers and military traditions of the Byzantine, Islamic and Central Asian worlds. Thumb rings were manufactured from various materials, including bronze, bone, horn and precious metals. Bronze examples offered durability and could be produced through established metalworking techniques. Their forms varied according to regional traditions, the type of bow employed and individual preferences. Archery was not limited to military campaigns. Bows were also used for hunting, training and the development of practical skills. Young archers could begin practising at an early age, although the small dimensions of a particular ring do not necessarily establish the age of its original owner. The precise geographical origin and association of this ring with the Crusades remain unconfirmed. Nevertheless, its form offers an interesting connection to medieval archery traditions and the practical equipment used by archers in both military and everyday contexts."
