All auctions / Contemporary Art / MEDSAN - Golden Totoro and the Soot Sprites (黄金のトトロとまっくろくろすけ) - UNIQUE WORK
THERE IS ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD - EDITION 1/1 On this square format, Medsan places Totoro, the great forest spirit from My Neighbor Totoro by Studio Ghibli, on a deep blue and gold background. Sitting upright, he faces the viewer with his round eyes and holds with one paw the stem of a large green leaf, carried above his head like an umbrella. Behind him a wide golden halo radiates, punctuated by blue squares. Its cream belly keeps its grey chevrons, but its flanks are covered with golden spirals, blue and black rectangles, and large open eyes. On either side, two soot sprites, the film’s smoke balls, drift with golden wings, attached to oak branches laden with acorns. The blue background is dotted with golden rosettes and dark cypress, and a border of oak leaves and acorns frames the scene. Deep blue, warm gold, and soft grey dominate, accented by the green of the leaf. Totoro here takes on the appearance of a guardian saluted in silence. A warm and precious piece, ideal for bringing a touch of golden softness to a contemporary collector’s Ghibli interior.
