Memphis, Tennessee. Farmers & Merchants Bank of Memphis. 1854 $1000.

Memphis, Tennessee. Farmers & Merchants Bank of Memphis. 1854 $1000. PCGS Currency Fine 12. No. 82. Plate A. A major rarity for the issuing bank despite its failure in 1854. This well-circulated note represents the highest denomination issued by the Farmers & Merchants Bank of Memphis and offers much even beyond the grade assigned. Sold roughly 18 years ago in 2008, this same note realized then approximately $2,300 once bidding had concluded. Per the Haxby text we know of at least two examples for this denomination, but even in 2026 this nonetheless remains a major opportunity even for the discerning specialist. PCGS Currency comments "Repairs; Small Rust Stains." Estimate: $800 - $1,200. Provenance: From the Caine Collection. Whitman Plate Note.
