Memphis, Texas. $10 1902 Date Back. Fr. 617. Hall County NB. Charter

Memphis, Texas. $10 1902 Date Back. Fr. 617. Hall County NB. Charter #8005. PCGS Banknote Very Good 10. Supposedly named after its better-known counterpart in Tennessee, Memphis traces a fairly typical history among the glut of rural settlements in Texas that had their beginnings in the 1880s. Situated in Hall County to the southeast of Amarillo, Memphis incorporated as a city less than two decades after initial settlement and roughly a year after the Hall County National Bank (Charter# 8005) had organized in 1905. Today only 19 non-institutional notes are recorded on this bank that ultimately merged with the First National Bank (Charter# 6107) in 1933. The bulk of that figure though is represented by notes issued under the Series of 1929 and this particular piece stands as one of two Series of 1902 $10 Date Backs recorded here by the National Bank Note Census and features extant signatures attributable to Cashier J.H. Read and President Houston E. Davis which are sure to appeal to bidders looking to represent this tough type and denomination on this desirable bank. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500. Provenance: From the Jack Copeland Currency Collection, Part IV. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
