MENTAWAI ISLANDS, WEST SUMATRA COAST, INDONESIA Community house panel on stilts with classical painted and incised decoration. These panels had magical powers, attracting the protection of good spirits and warding off evil ones. Generally made of jackfruit wood, they were decorated with footprints (rooting, link with invisible forces), handprints (protection and power, contact with ancestors) and geometric motifs symbolizing the organization of the universe. Rests on a blackened wood and metal base. Size: approx. 169 x 32 x 2 cm (without base) Condition for use and care
