Ancient Near Eastern cylindrical seal carved from dark grey to black stone, featuring a richly detailed continuous figural scene. The seal is pierced longitudinally through the centre, allowing it originally to be carried on a cord or pin and rolled across soft clay to produce the complete image. The accompanying modern impression clearly reveals the entire composition. At the centre is a two-wheeled chariot, distinguished by a large spoked wheel and a lattice-like chariot body. Human figures appear on or immediately beside the vehicle. Additional figures are depicted with bows, giving the scene a distinctly hunting or martial character. Several long-legged and long-necked animals may be interpreted as camelids, probably dromedaries. A large upright predator with a long tail is also represented, most plausibly a lion, apparently engaged in an attack or combat scene. Other animals are shown in highly animated or partially fallen positions, creating an unusually dynamic and narrative composition. Above individual figures and animals appear multi-rayed star or astral symbols, possibly adding a symbolic or religious dimension beyond the literal hunting or combat scene. Iconography and Symbolic Background Cylinder seals in the Ancient Near East were not merely practical instruments for sealing documents, containers and goods. They could also function as highly personal markers of identity, status and authority, while their imagery frequently incorporated religious, protective and symbolic concepts. The lion was among the most powerful symbols of the Ancient Near East. It could embody wilderness, danger and untamed strength, while at the same time being associated with royal power and authority. Hunting and animal-combat imagery could therefore symbolise the mastery of dangerous forces and the triumph of order over chaos. Chariots and archers were likewise closely connected with hunting, warfare, prestige and rulership. The astral signs appearing above the scene may indicate an additional celestial or divine dimension. Whether the composition represents a specific mythological narrative or instead combines several symbols of protection, power and authority cannot be determined with certainty. The unusual combination of chariot, archers, camelids, predator and celestial symbols makes the continuous scene particularly interesting from an iconographic perspective. Age- and use-related surface wear, minor chips and deposits. The continuous engraved design remains generally well legible. Complete longitudinal central perforation. The accompanying impression is provided to show the complete engraved composition more clearly. Please refer to the photographs for the exact condition. From a European private collection. Acquired in various countries of Southern Europe during the 1960s by a private collector of antiquities and archaeological objects. Subsequently inherited within the family and later brought to Sweden. Note: The dating and cultural attribution are based solely on stylistic characteristics. The object is offered with the provenance described above and in accordance with the accompanying photographs. A rare and decorative collector’s piece with an interesting old collection history and an impressive figural representation.
