All auctions / Miscellaneous / Michael Dahl (1659-1743), Circle of - Portrait of a Court Lady in a Red Dress
- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. - Michael Dahl (1659–1743) was a prominent Swedish-born portraitist who spent the bulk of his successful career in late 17th- and early 18th-century England. After training initially in Stockholm under David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl, Dahl embarked on an enriching journey across Europe that took him to Paris, Venice and Rome, where he absorbed the currents of the continental Baroque. Upon his definitive return to London in 1689, he established himself as the principal rival of Sir Godfrey Kneller, becoming the preferred painter of Queen Anne’s court and of the Prince of Denmark, capturing the aristocracy and political elite with a refinement that secured him a lasting place in British art history. Regarding his style, Dahl is distinguished by a softer brushwork and a richer, warmer color palette than his contemporaries, moving away from formal rigidity to endow his sitters with an atmosphere of serenity and distinction. His portraits reflect an aesthetic shift toward a more restrained, humane Baroque, where meticulous attention to the textures of silks and velvets does not obscure the subject’s psychological characterization. Unlike the almost industrial production of other workshops of the era, Dahl’s oeuvre preserves a lyrical elegance and a naturalistic grace that allow his figures to breathe with a tranquil dignity, consolidating a canon of beauty and status that defined the image of nobility during the Stuart period and the early Hanoverian era. Image dimensions without frame: 62 x 75 cm / 79 x 90.5 cm with exclusive tailor-made frame.
