All auctions / Furniture, Design & Mirrors / Michael Graves (American, 1934-2015), Plaza Vanity and Stool

1981, maple veneer, lacquered wood, mirrored glass, glass, brass, the vanity with two lighted globes and (52) small exposed bulbs, central circular swivel mirror, six drawers, labeled. 92.75 x 60.5 x 20.5 in. Collection of Sydney and Frances Lewis, Richmond, Virginia The vanity merges the opulent aesthetics of Art Deco and Old Hollywood glamour with Graves’ signature architectural style. Its form mimics the stepped profile of a Manhattan skyscraper. Like many designs from the Memphis collective, it is famous for its deliberate irony: the elaborate, luxurious piece is actually constructed from inexpensive everyday materials like medium-density fiberboard (MDF) coated in maple veneer. Only about 30 to 40 units were ever produced, making it a highly coveted collector's item.
