Michael Ome Untiedt (American, b. 1952). Signed "MT" at lower right. Oil on canvas, n.d. An inviting landscape painting by Michael Ome Untiedt that captures unspoken ties between humankind and nature. Born and raised in Colorado, Untiedt captures the American West with his signature shimmering palette, expressive brushstrokes, and lively impasto technique. In this painting, Untiedt welcomes the viewer to peer through a screen of aspen trees, imagine the sound of the rippling creek - nature's tranquil music - as boulders punctuate the banks of these flowing waters, and simultaneously appreciate the understated vernacular charm of a red-roofed barn and the contrasting majestic sublimity of the mountains beyond. Size (sight view): ~23" L x 29" W (58.4 cm x 73.7 cm) Size (frame): 30.75" L x 37" W (78.1 cm x 94 cm) As Bonnie Gangelhoff keenly described in Southwest Art, "Michael Ome Untiedt likes to tell stories in his paintings. Some stories come to him as a historical footnote he has discovered, while others arrive in the form of a personal memory from days gone by. For Untiedt, the past is never quite past nor left behind to gather dust. While Untiedt's subject matter focuses on the West, it's not the shoot-em-up West of Hollywood lore where gunslingers fight it out at the OK Corral or take aim in a duel at high noon. Instead, his paintings are about capturing 'the countless ordinary human moments' that are also part of the West. The Denver-based artist prefers to leave the extraordinary, high-drama events to the history books and movies. 'I prefer to paint like Mark Twain wrote,' he says." I know the rattle of cottonwoods on a cold fall morning, the hue of dusk's long light on a buffalo grass prairie: I have drunk the cold drip of a blue shale spring. These things have nurtured me from my birth, and coyotes, God's dogs, have howled their essence into my soul." (source: Briscoe Western Art Museum, "Michael Ome Untiedt") In recognition of Untiedt's historical paintings of the Texas Rangers, he recently earned the title of honorary Ranger captain with the Former Texas Ranger Foundation, Fredericksburg, Texas. In 2014, he was honored with the Art Committee Choice Award during the Briscoe Western Art Museum's Night of Artists in San Antonio, Texas. In addition, Untiedt received the 2014 Wells Fargo Gold Award at the Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale in Cody, Wyoming. Item # 184074
