Rare Early Ceramic Crucifix – Rogier Vandeweghe / Bruges, Sint-Andries (1956-1959), Belgium. This rare and early modernist ceramic wall crucifix was designed by the renowned Belgian ceramic artist Rogier Vandeweghe for his atelier in Sint-Andries. A special collectible from the early years of the atelier between 1956 and 1959, made in the sought-after pioneering period just before the workshop officially adopted the name Amphora in 1960 and began applying the well-known workshop stamp consistently. The reverse shows the characteristic rough clay and bears the original shop tag from Kunsthandel Van Gucht in Dendermonde. The base of the crucifix is finished with a beautiful, subtle beige to off-white tin glaze, forming a strong contrast with the stylized Christus figure in a deep, dark brown glaze. The loincloth of the figure is finely accented with soft turquoise and light blue glaze details. The object is in very good condition. The crucifix measures approximately 20 centimeters in width, 24.5 centimeters in height, and a thickness of just over 1 centimeter.
