All auctions / Ancient Art / Middle Ages - Carolingian vase in black ceramic - 8th/10th century
A black ceramic vase dating from the Carolingian period Very rare black ceramic vessel coated with a glaze on the inner walls, with some traces on the exterior as well. Cylindrical form, slightly bulging, small circular foot. The body is adorned with circular grooves halfway up. The interior of the vessel is covered with a lead glaze. Germany, Carolingian period, 8th/10th century. This vessel is an exceptional testimony to pottery made in Northern Europe, covered with a lead glaze, predating salt glaze. The technique of salt glazing would only become possible in Europe later, thanks to higher temperatures (1150° to 1350°) required to vitrify the glaze. The glaze was generally applied inside the pottery to make it watertight. Diameter 7.6 cm - Height 5.2 cm - intact piece, only a few small chips This vase of the 8th/10th century is described as "primitive"; it is one of the earliest examples of European pottery covered with a glaze. With its boat-shaped form on a broad foot, and its simple decoration, this museum-worthy vase marks the beginning of high-fired ceramics production. Very good condition - it is very rare to find such a piece intact. Provenance: Germany, P.K.B. gallery. Previously: former Dutch private collection. The seller can prove that the lot was obtained legally; provenance declaration seen by Catawiki. Important information: The seller guarantees that they are authorized to sell/export this lot. The seller will arrange the necessary authorizations, such as an export license. (Cultural object passport) The seller will inform the buyer of their status if it takes more than a few days. All seller’s items are shipped with insurance up to the purchase price and are accompanied by an illustrated descriptive document stating provenance."
