Mirror - Wood - Venetian mirror

Typology: Wall mirror with a shaped frame and a wavy edge in the late Baroque/Rococo taste. Materials: Carved and gilded wood with incised and punched vegetal decoration; mirror with antique silvering. Measurements: Mirror 42 × 57 cm; overall footprint 66 × 81 cm. Description: Shaped frame with gilded volutes and sprigs on a dark brown-reddish background. The back shows ancient joints and assemblies; the mirror exhibits widespread oxidation and losses of silvering consistent with age. Conservation: Decent/good for its age, with wear to the gilding, cracks, small fractures, and oxidation of the mirror. Intervention: A light conservational treatment is advisable, avoiding invasive retouching. Dating: Second half of the 18th century – early 19th century, approximately 1770–1820. Prudently attributed to the Veneto area. Provenance: from an ancient private collection of the Premoli family, later Premoli Silva, a historic Lombard noble family of old origin; the work has been preserved and handed down within the family through several generations, up to the current ownership by lineage.
