Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec. A tripod molcajete, or grater bowl, with flaring walls rising from three hollow, bulbous feet. Loose clay pellets sealed inside the feet still rattle when the bowl is moved, so even grinding made a soft percussive sound. A burnished red-orange slip covers the interior. Cream paint divides it into panels: two stylized profile heads with curling crests and scrolled ornaments face each other across the bowl, separated by a rectangular cartouche of wavy lines. At the center, a ringed medallion frames a floor deeply scored in a crosshatched grid. Cooks rubbed chiles, tomatoes, and other ingredients against this rough surface. Paint and practical function sit together here, and the heads may represent birds or serpents, though the motifs are too abstract to say for sure. Tripod grater bowls were common kitchen vessels across Postclassic Mesoamerica. Their name comes from the Nahuatl molcaxitl, meaning sauce bowl, and they are the direct ancestors of the basalt molcajetes still used in Mexican kitchens. Potters often made the feet hollow and added small clay pellets, turning a kitchen tool into a gentle rattle. Similar rattle feet appear widely in the ceramics of highland Mexico and Oaxaca.
