Fahrner jewellery from Pforzheim occupies a special place in the history of jewellery from Germany. For Theodor Fahrner and later his successor Gustav Braendle knew how to make artistically convincing designs and high-quality workmanship the hallmark of their brooches, necklaces, bracelets and earrings in the epochs of Art Nouveau and Art Deco like hardly any other modern jewellery manufacturer. But even during the period of reconstruction after 1945, Fahrner jewellery remained a household name. At first, the company mainly produced designs that formally followed on from its earlier successes. But soon Pforzheim was also producing in the taste of the new age. Interesting and unusual structures, daring volumes and expressive reliefs were in demand. "Textures fascinate craftsmen today more than ever before" wrote Graham Hughes in "Modern Jewelry", London 1963. The necklace here is a beautiful and rare example from the Farhrner Manufacture. Three lip-shaped links, set side by side as if in a row, form the centerpiece. The surface of these links has a bark-like structure and refracts the incident light very effectively through concave grinding. A small cultured pearl studs each of the links in the middle. Pod-like links lead to the clasp. The handcrafted look of the design gives the necklace the appearance of a unique hand-forged piece. Since the early years of the company, travelling salesmen with large sample cases had presented the innovations developed in Pforzheim to local jewellers every year. One such sample case had lain untouched in an attic for more than 40 years until it was offered to us. It contained samples of almost all series from about 1919 until the dissolution of the company in 1979, mostly marked with a model number or the "Original Fahrner" seal. This 1950's piece of jewellery comes from this sample case and is therefore unworn and perfectly preserved. An old price tag with the order number has survived on the necklace. The wholesale price was 59 D-Mark. Fahrner jewellery is a pleasure to collect. Discover all the other Fahrner jewellery we offer at this site. A wonderful overview is provided by the catalogue "Theodor Fahrner. Schmuck zwischen Avantgarde und Tradition", edited by Brigitte Leonhardt and Dieter Zühlsdorff, Stuttgart 2005.
