It was first presented to the scientific public in 1786 as “Chrysolithe” from Týn nad Vltavou in a lecture by Professor Josef Mayer of the University of Prague, delivered at a meeting of the Bohemian Scientific Society (Mayer 1788). Zippe (1836) first used the term “Moldavit,” deriving from the town Moldauthein (Czech: Týn nad Vltavou) – today in Bohemia (Czech Republic), where the first described pieces came from. Campo Del Cielo meteorites are classified as coarse iron octahedrites of type IAB. This meteor impact occurred about 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. The first discovery was documented in 1576 by a Spanish captain named Miravel, although the actual impact was presumably observed by indigenous Indians who originally called this region the “Field of Heaven.” Herkimer Diamonds are doubly terminated quartz crystals found in exposed dolomite outcrops in and around Herkimer County, New York, and the Mohawk River Valley in the USA. They are not diamonds; the name “Diamond” derives from their clarity and the well-formed faces. Since the earliest finds were in the village of Middleville or the town of Little Falls, the crystal is also referred to as Middleville Diamond or Little Falls Diamond.
