The monkey wears a tall hat (eboshi) and holds a bell-bearing instrument (kagura suzu). He pretends to be a Sanbaso dancer. Sanbaso is a Japanese dance, performed during Old and New Year celebrations. The dance originated in the 9th century as a dance to prevent earthquakes. It is also performed during weddings. At the end of the dance it is spoken aloud: How fortunate we are that this generation lives in peace! The netsuke is 8 cm long.
