Monolithic sculpture of celadon jadeite, China, Qing dynasty, 19th century

Monolithic sculpture of celadon jadeite, China, Qing dynasty, 19th century

Descriptio Monolithic sculpture of translucent celadon jadeite (ranging from pale green to milky white), depicting a monkey seated in a dynamic pose, with flexed legs and one raised hand holding a longevity peach, of a deeper emerald hue, on its left shoulder and above its head. The expressive face features a prominent snout, eyes inlaid with black substances, a curled tail, and finely crafted anatomical details: ears, fingers, and stylized hair. The monkey (hou) holding the longevity peach alludes, according to the original, to the Chinese pun “ma souai” (“to arrive soon”), a symbol of immortality and longevity, a popular motif in jade sculptures since the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Translucent celadon jade, polished to a silky sheen, with no visible cracks or chips and slight natural black inclusions. China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century. Height: 7 cm. Batch in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipment: no import duties apply within the EU. An export permit from the country of origin may be required.
