Mount Calm, Texas. $20 1929 Ty. 1. Fr. 1802-1. First NB. Charter #10297. PCGS Banknote Choice Uncirculated 63. Little more than an isolated outpost of civilization in Hill County that was originally settled in the 1850s, Mt. Calm stagnated in the immediate decades that followed until the railroad came to the area in the 1880s. This saw the relocation of the townsite to a location closer to the railroad which preceded a period of rapid growth and the formation of new banks and businesses such as the J. B. Bank of Mt. Calm which was ultimately succeeded by the First National Bank (Charter# 10297) in 1912. In most regards, this institution led an unremarkable life and fell to liquidation in 1933, but this helps underscore the rarity of this bank which records a total of 24 non-institutional notes in the National Bank Note Census where this note stands as a major outlier by virtue of the grade assigned. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500. Provenance: From the Jack Copeland Currency Collection, Part IV. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
