Museum piece "Steinhardter Erbse" - Fossilised wood...

For sale: An exceptionally large, top-quality specimen of a so-called "Steinhardter Erbse" (Steinhardt pea). This is a worldwide unique geological phenomenon originating from a now-closed and protected classic locality in Germany. The specimen consists of a heavy barite-sandstone concretion that has been expertly cut longitudinally and polished. This reveals the dark, three-dimensional core of a prehistoric plant remnant (fossil wood or a fruit cone) beautifully exposed. The light, radial rim around the core displays the unique crystalline structure of the mineral barite (baryte), which also explains the surprisingly high weight of no less than 704 grams. This lot is supplied with the original finder’s label from 2014, which completes the historical value and provenance for collectors. An absolute eye-catcher for any serious fossil or mineral collection! Scientific name (Scientific Name): Barite-sandstone pseudomorph after conifer wood / Barite-sandstone concretion after conifer wood. Common name (Common Name): Steinhardter Erbse (Steinhardt pea / Steinhardt Pea). Locality (Locality): Barth Sand Pit, Steinhardt (Bad Sobernheim), Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany / Barth Sand Pit, Steinhardt, Germany. Formation (Formation): Alzey Formation. Age (Age): Lower Oligocene (Rupelian) – approx. 30 million years old. Discovery Date (Discovery Date): 16 August 2014 (as stated on original label) [image_mdsQbi]. Dimensions (Dimensions): approx. 15.5 x 7.0 x 4.5 cm. Weight (Weight): 704 grams
