Mysia, Pergamon. Ca. 150-133 BC. Æ (Bronze, 16 mm, 2.47 g). Obv: Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with an eight-pointed star on the bowl. Rev: AΘHNAΣ / NIKHΦOPOY. Its rulers transformed the city into a centre of Hellenistic art and learning, celebrated for its monumental architecture and library, which rivalled Alexandria’s. Allied with Rome, the kingdom expanded across western Asia Minor. In 133 BC, Attalos III bequeathed his realm to Rome, paving the way for the province of Asia.
