A snake, shimmering dangerously, coils around a slender crescent moon. Its eyes gaze intently at us and a red ruby adorns its head. The moon itself sparkles as five octagonal-cut diamonds are set in simple frames on it. This imaginative piece of jewellery with its symbolist motif was created in the years before the turn of the last century. Its design evokes numerous associations and captures memories of the dark romantic spirit of the fin de siècle, when mysterious designs full of dark romanticism were all the rage. We discovered the brooch in Saarland. Some eighty years after its creation, the pin and safety clasp were renewed and the diamonds were added at the same time.
