The small fourteen-year-old dancer (French: La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans) is a sculpture, begun around 1880 by Edgar Degas, of a young pupil from the Paris Opera Ballet school, a Belgian named Marie van Goethem. Because Degas’s eyesight deteriorated rapidly after his fifties, he increasingly had to rely on his sense of touch. Sculpture turned out to be a solution. Although in this final period of his life he showed his work to almost no one, he decided, after two years of working on The Dancer, to submit the work for the Impressionist exhibition in Paris.
