Naar Marcel Bouraine 'Satyr met Fluit' - Relief

This impressive octagonal Art Deco bas-relief is a high-quality reconstruction of the rare work ‘Satyr with a Flute’, made after the French sculptor Marcel Bouraine (1886–1948). Bouraine was a leading artist within the Art Deco period and gained international fame with his elegant sculptures inspired by classical mythological themes. Although largely self-taught, he studied for a time under the renowned sculptor Jean-Alexandre-Joseph Falguière. From 1922 Bouraine exhibited at the prestigious Salon des Tuileries and other important Paris salons. He also collaborated with prominent art publishers such as Susse Frères, Etling, Max Le Verrier and Arthur Goldscheider. The original relief is known only from a historical photograph published in the rare portfolio La Sculpture Décorative Moderne (Paris, 1925), an important publication documenting European decorative art from the period 1920–1936. The original relief is considered lost and may have been destroyed during World War II. The object offered in this auction has been designed and manufactured with the greatest care by Atelier Laurier Design. Based on the historical photo, an extremely accurate reconstruction has been realized, with every detail carefully modeled to reproduce as faithfully as possible the artistic quality and elegance of the original design. This reconstruction revives a once-lost artwork and makes it accessible to a new generation of art lovers and collectors. The bas-relief is signed and numbered on the back. The accompanying certificate of provenance is also included. The relief is in excellent condition and will be carefully packaged and professionally shipped.
