All auctions / Ethnographical / Nautilus Sea shell - S-617 ARGONAUTA HIANS (No reserve price)

A very beautiful shell of Argonauta hians—also known as the winged argonaut, mud argonaut, or brown paper nautilus—is a species of pelagic octopod. The common name comes from the gray-brown shell. The Chinese name for this species means “nest of the gray seahorse.” The female of this species, like all argonauts, creates a paper-thin eggshell that wraps around the octopus in the same way a nautilus lives in its shell (hence the name “paper nautilus”). The eggshell is characterized by a broad keel that gives it a square appearance, several rounded knobs along the keel, and fewer than 40 smooth ribs on the sides of the shell. Dimensions: 50/35/75 mm. Highly recommended for collectors and interior designers."
