epal, Patan, Shrinivasa Malla (1661-1684), Suki, undated, Obv. sword with garland in central square, enclosed by diamond, legend Śrīnivāsa Malla, Rev. large flower in centre and legend around Kalunāmaya [instead of correct Karunāmaya, but note that in coin inscriptions of the Malla period the letters “ra” and “la” appear to be interchangeable, although their pronunciation in Newari is different in contrast to some southeast Asian languages], 1.28g, 12h (RGV 386), pierced twice, otherwise very fine and very rare Provenance The Nicholas Rhodes Collection of Nepalese Coins and Medals: Part Two B.N. Shrestha, December 1989, by private treaty - $100 Karumamaya is another name of Matsyendranath, the patron deity of Patan. “Karunamaya Bungadya or Bungamati Avalokiteshvara is also called Karunamya Avalokiteshvara, the Boddhisattva of Compassion. His local Newar name is derived from the earlier form Bugama (or Bugma) Lokeshvara. Iconographically he is Padmapani, holding a lotus in his left hand and showing the boon-giving gesture with his right. Popularly, and especially to the Hindus, he is Rato Matsyendranath, the guru of Gorakhanth and the patron siddha of Patan.” (Kevin Bubriski and Keith Dowman: Power Places of Kathamndu. Hindu and Buddhist Holy Sites in the Sacred Valley of Nepal. Thames and Hudson, London 1995). Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium. For more information please view Terms and Conditions for Buyers.
