epal, Surendra Vikram Shah (1847-1881), Copper Dam or Token or 2-Paisa, undated, Obv. legend in nine double squares, Rev. sword with wreath in double square, illegible legend outside, 9.00g, 12h (RGV T4 this coin), some spots of verdigris, good very fine and extremely scarce; Nepal, Prithvi Vir Vikram Shah (1881-1911), Token 16-Paisa, struck on a brass planchet with central hole, Obv. obverse mohar die, dated SE 1824, Rev. legend 16/paisa, 3.23g (RGV T6 this token), very fine; Token 16-Paisa, much as before, 3.34g, (RGV T7 this token), some staining, about very fine; Token 14-Paisa (2), struck on an iron planchet with central hole, Obv. obverse Half-Mohar die, dated SE 1824, Rev. legend 14/paisa, 1.53g, 1.57g (RGV T8), slightly rusty, extremely fine; Token 12-Paisa, much as before, Rev. legend reads 12/paisa, 1.58g (RGV T9), slightly rusty, extremely fine (6) Provenance The Nicholas Rhodes Collection of Nepalese Coins and Medals: Part Two i) Philatelic Shop, September 1967 [with Rhodes' ticket annotated '2 Paisa? or perhaps a door pass for Singha Durbar' Rhodes quotes the following in RGV: 'We have no idea what this copper piece was used for. It may be an early pattern for the copper coinage, but that seems unlikely, as the two specimens we have seen are both well circulated' ii) P. Telco, 16 May 1966, by private treaty Compare with Mohar described above as RGV 1218. Satya Mohan Joshi suggested that these tokens were used to pay labourers involved in the construction of the new Royal Palace in AD 1902.
