Unique Coincard – 300 Years of the VOC, 1602-1902 The power that made the Netherlands wealthy – and its dark side. A trading company that grew into a world power. Netherlands, 1602. The United East India Company, better known as the VOC, is founded. What begins as a trading organization grows in the centuries to come into a powerful international company with its own fleet, soldiers, administrators and trading settlements. The VOC plays an important role in the Dutch Golden Age. Ships depart from the Republic to Asia in search of spices, textiles, porcelain and other precious goods. Trade routes are built and Dutch ships connect Europe with areas in Asia. The wealth earned thereby contributes to the economic and cultural flowering of the Republic. The VOC becomes a symbol of Dutch trading spirit, entrepreneurship and maritime power. But behind this success lies a much darker story. The history of the VOC cannot be told without attention to colonialism, violence and exploitation. The VOC pursued a trading monopoly and used not only economic means but also military power for that purpose. In several places in Asia, force was used to compel trading interests and to eliminate competitors. Local populations were subdued and existing trading structures were harshly influenced or destroyed. One of the most poignant examples is the Banda Islands. In 1621, under the leadership of Jan Pieterszoon Coen, a violent subjugation of the Bandanese people took place, with many people killed, driven away or enslaved. The islands were subsequently organized for nutmeg production under VOC control. Slavery was also part of the colonial reality in which the VOC operated. Enslaved people were traded and forced to work in areas under Dutch influence. The company’s economic interests often outweighed the freedom and human dignity of the local population. So the VOC brought the Netherlands not only wealth and trading power. Its history also shows how economic power, colonial domination and violence could be intertwined. Three centuries after its founding, in 1902, this history was looked back upon as both remarkable and complex. The heart of this Coincard is formed by a Dutch 1 cent coin from 1902. This coin comes from the commemorative year and provides a tangible link to the Netherlands at the start of the 20th century. A small piece of metal from a time when the memory of the VOC was still strongly connected to national pride, trade and Dutch colonial power. At the same time, this coin invites us to look beyond the success story alone. The VOC was an organization that brought great economic and geopolitical influence to the Netherlands, but that influence came at a high price for many. Therefore this Coincard does not solely reflect on the entrepreneurial spirit and achievements of the VOC, but also on the people who encountered colonial oppression, violence, forced labor and slavery. This Coincard aims to remember and raise awareness. Because history does not consist only of victories and economic success. It is also the story of the people who experienced this history and sometimes bore the heaviest consequences of it. Three centuries of VOC leave a multifaceted legacy: from world trade and shipping to colonial domination, violence and slavery. This Coincard is therefore not a glorification of the VOC, but a reminder of its full history – with both the achievements and the shadow side. **** Serial numbers are issued randomly **** Unique Coincards, commemorative edition.
