etherlands – House of Orange-Nassau – Set of 11 Gilt Restrike Medals after J.J. van Goor – 36 mm Set of 11 commemorative portrait medals relating to the House of Orange-Nassau. The medals are reduced-size restrikes based on portrait designs from the series created by Dutch medallist Jacob Jan (J.J.) van Goor. Obverses: The set contains portraits of: 1. William I, Prince of Orange – bust facing right; legend identifying him as Prince of Orange and Count of Nassau. 2. Anna Pavlovna of Russia – bust facing right; consort of King William II. 3. Louise de Coligny – facing bust; wife of William I, Prince of Orange. 4. William I, King of the Netherlands – bust facing right. 5. Anne of Great Britain – bust facing left; wife of William IV, Prince of Orange. 6. Juliana, Princess of the Netherlands – bust facing left. 7. William II, King of the Netherlands – uniformed bust facing left. 8. Johan Willem Friso, Prince of Orange-Nassau – bust facing slightly left. 9. Maurice, Prince of Orange and Count of Nassau – bust facing slightly right. 10. Emma of Waldeck-Pyrmont – bust facing right; wife of King William III. 11. William V, Prince of Orange-Nassau – bust facing right. The individual names and titles are incorporated in the surrounding legends. Reverse: Identical on all 11 medals: crowned quartered arms within the Order of the Garter, the Garter bearing the motto: HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE Outer legend: PATRIAEQUE PATRIQUE The latter was the motto associated with Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, meaning approximately “for the fatherland and for the father.” DBNL Specifications: Number of medals: 11 Diameter: 36 mm each Finish: Gilt Type: Reduced-size restrikes Original designs: J.J. van Goor Context: These portraits are derived from the well-known series of 24 portrait medals of members of the House of Orange, designed by J.J. van Goor and issued by Koninklijke Begeer in 1930, in connection with the 50th birthday of Queen Wilhelmina. The original series consisted of 60 mm medals and is catalogued as Begeer III 403–426.
