etherlands – Zeeland and Netherlands East Indies – Four Double Stuivers and ⅒ Gulden 1857 – Lot of 5 A group of five coins combining provincial coinage of the Dutch Republic with a nineteenth-century issue for the Netherlands East Indies. The lot comprises: - Zeeland: four double wapenstuivers, dated 1733, 1753 and 1765, together with one example with an illegible date. - Netherlands East Indies: ⅒ gulden, 1857, issued during the reign of William III. The Zeeland coins feature the provincial name ZEELANDIA and the crowned shield with a lion rising above waves, flanked by the denomination 2 S. These issues were struck at Middelburg. The 1857 tenth gulden was struck at Utrecht. It displays the crowned Dutch arms and denomination on one side, with Malay lettering in Arabic script and a surrounding Javanese inscription on the other. Together, the coins illustrate the transition from the Republic’s provincial small change to the decimal coinage of the Netherlands East Indies.
