The Three Cities – Three-Plak 1556 – Deventer – With a distinctive eagle punch The Netherlands – The Three Cities (Deventer, Kampen and Zwolle) – 1556 Historically interesting three-plak from 1556, issued by the joint mint towns Deventer, Kampen and Zwolle. This sixteenth-century coin represents a special period in Dutch coin history, in which the three Overijssel Hanseatic towns issued coins together. Their economic cooperation and trading interests are expressed in a distinctive, recognizable coinage. The offered specimen furthermore possesses a special feature: a punch in the form of an eagle, presumably applied to distinguish the three-plak coins of the Three Cities from issues from Hasselt and Zutphen. Obverse A decorated long cross with the central denomination 3, surrounded by rosettes in the four quadrants. Legend: TRIVM · CIVIT · A · IMP · C · 56 The inscription refers to the three cities and the mint year 1556. Reverse The coats of arms of Deventer, Kampen and Zwolle, with the central denomination 3. Legend: ZWOLLE : DAVENTR : CAMPEN : The punctuation consists of three points that touch each other. Special feature – Eagle punch The coin bears a historic punch in the shape of an eagle, cataloged as Van der Wis, punch A4. This punch was presumably applied to distinguish the three-plak coins of the Three Cities from issues of Hasselt and Zutphen. An interesting numismatic detail that adds extra historical significance to the specimen and provides a tangible reminder of the complex coin circulation in the sixteenth-century Netherlands.
