The surrounding Latin legend reads MO. ARG. PRO. CONFOE. BELG. TRAN., referring to the silver coinage of the Dutch United Provinces. Reverse: Lion rampant facing left, with the date 1644 above. The design is surrounded by a Latin inscription traditionally associated with the coinage of the Dutch Republic. Historical Context The Leeuwendaalder, commonly known as the Lion Daalder, was among the most influential silver trade coins issued by the Dutch Republic during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. First introduced in 1575, the Leeuwendaalder became an important currency in international commerce. Its characteristic design, featuring an armoured knight and a heraldic lion, made it recognisable across the extensive trading networks of the Dutch Republic. During the seventeenth century, the Netherlands developed into one of Europe’s leading maritime and commercial powers. Dutch merchants carried silver coins throughout Europe, the Ottoman Empire, the Middle East and Asia, where the Leeuwendaalder became widely accepted in commercial transactions. These coins were particularly influential in southeastern Europe, where their circulation contributed to the development of local monetary terminology. The modern names of the Romanian leu and Bulgarian lev ultimately derive from the word for lion, reflecting the historical influence of Dutch lion coinage. Struck in 1644, this example belongs to the period commonly known as the Dutch Golden Age, when the Republic’s maritime trade and commercial activities reached unprecedented levels.
