Eighth silver ducat of Zeeland, known as a “pietje”, dated 1791 and struck at Middelburg. Obverse: Standing armoured knight facing right, holding a shouldered sword and a ribbon supporting the crowned arms of Zeeland. A castle mintmark appears above. The surrounding Latin legend is partly legible. Reverse: Crowned arms of the Dutch Republic, depicting a lion holding a sword and a bundle of arrows. A branch and arrows flank the shield. The date is divided above the crown: 17–91. Historical and numismatic context: The nickname “pietje” refers to the small standing knight. As an eighth of the silver ducat, this denomination reproduces the principal imagery of the larger coin: the armoured knight with the provincial shield and the crowned arms of the Dutch Republic. Diameter: 22 mm Weight: 3.38 g Catalogue references: Verkade 87.4 Purmer & Van der Wiel, HPM Ze 54 Van der Wis & Passon, CNM 2.49.55
