The Maxim MG11 (officially the Maschinengewehr Modell 1911) is a legendary Swiss heavy machine gun based on the famous Maxim system. It is known for its exceptional Swiss build quality and extreme reliability under harsh conditions. Here are the key details about the weapon: Production history • Origin: Switzerland experimented very early with Hiram Maxim's automatic weapon. After Maxim's patents expired, the German manufacturer DWM introduced the improved commercial model of 1909. The Swiss adopted this lighter and stronger variant as the MG11. • Manufacturers: The first 167 units were supplied by DWM Berlin. When deliveries halted by the outbreak of World War I in 1915, the Swiss state weapons factory Waffenfabrik Bern (W+F) took over production. • Quantities: Between 1915 and 1946, W+F Bern produced another 10,269 units. Technical specifications • Caliber: The rifle fires the powerful 7.5×55 mm Swiss (GP 11) rifle cartridge. • Cooling: It is a water-cooled system (the characteristic thick cylinder around the barrel contains about 4 liters of water to prevent overheating). • Weight: The weapon itself weighs 18.7 kg (excluding water and the heavy tripod accessory). • Rate of fire: About 500 rounds per minute. • Effective range: Adjustable via a folding sight (or Zeiss optical sight) from 400 to 2,600 meters.
