Important and vivid original geographic map of the historic region of Alta Gheldria, copper-engraved in the very early years of the 18th century by the famous royal geographer Nicolas de Fer (1646–1720) AbeBooks. This sought-after double-page plate, marked with the number 141 in the upper right corner, comes from the famous and rich work L'Atlas Curieux ou Le Monde représenté dans des cartes générales et particulières, published in Paris Duchy of Gueldre (1339-1790) - Cartes et plans - Bnf Data. The map describes with exceptional graphic detail a territorially strategic and fragmented area, today divided between the province of Limburg (Netherlands) and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany). At the center of the map stand the historic fortresses and fortified towns of Geldern, Venlo and Roermond, depicted with their respective defensive plans enclosed by bastioned ramparts AbeBooks. The work also shows the important watercourse of the Fossa Eugeniana (the canal that linked the Rhine and the Meuse), as well as dense networks of villages, mills and forests AbeBooks. The exemplar is magnificently adorned with a contemporaneous coloration of the territories that chromatically delimit its historical borders and geopolitical spheres of influence, including lands connected to the Elector of Cologne. In the bottom right corner stands an elegant rectangular cartouche decorated with a frame, containing the descriptive title, the author’s dedication to the Catholic Majesty and to the Dauphin of France, and the graphic scales expressed in leagues. The engraving is attributed to the hand of the expert French engraver Charles Inselin AbeBooks.
