Zeeland – Dutch ducat 1794 – Middelburg – Republic of the Seven United Netherlands Northern Netherlands – Republic of the Seven United Netherlands – Province of Zeeland Copper ducat from 1794, minted for the province of Zeeland during the final years of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. This provincial coin bears the characteristic Zeeland coat of arms with the lion rising out of the water, an age-old symbol of the fight against the water. Historical background Zeeland had, during the Republic, an important own minting tradition, with provincial coins manufactured in Middelburg. The Zeeland lion, rising partly from the water, refers to the province's ongoing struggle against the sea. The accompanying motto Luctor et Emergo literally means: I struggle and rise. The year 1794 makes this ducat historically interesting. Only one year later, in 1795, the Batavian Revolution brought an end to the old Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. Obverse: The inscription ZEELANDIA, divided over three lines, with the year 1794 below. The whole within a pearl border. Reverse: The crowned, indented provincial arms of Zeeland with a climbing lion rising from the wavy water lines. Inscription: LUCTOR ET EMERGO. Translation: I struggle and rise.
