Newfoundland 1931 - Spectacular Five-Colour Triangular...

An eye-catching first-flight cover featuring the complete three-value design set of Newfoundland’s 1931 pictorial airmail issue: 15 cents brown, 50 cents green and $1 blue, with a total face value of $1.65. The beautifully detailed stamps illustrate Newfoundland’s aviation heritage: - 15c: aircraft above a dog-sled team. - 50c: aircraft and sailing vessel, recalling the carriage of ocean mail. - $1: a map showing historic transatlantic flight routes. All three stamps are tied by violet St. John’s flight cancellations dated 29 January 1931. The front also bears the violet “ST. JOHNS TO HAMPDEN” route cachet and a prominent blue boxed “POST OFFICE / NEWFOUNDLAND / FEB 9 1931 / HAMPDEN” arrival handstamp. Addressed to Mr John S. Davis in Liverpool, England, the cover combines an inaugural Newfoundland airmail route with an overseas destination. Additional St. John’s postal markings and a further Hampden arrival strike appear on the reverse. Its principal collecting appeal lies in the complete pictorial airmail franking, including the striking $1 high value, together with the route-specific flight cachets and arrival markings on both sides. A particularly attractive display item for collectors of Newfoundland and early aviation postal history. The lot comprises the single cover shown.
