Nicolaes Visscher (maps) - [UIT KERK HEEREWAARDEN] Biblia

[KANSELBIJBEL UIT HERVORMDE KERK HEEREWAARDEN] N.N. - Bible, that is, the Entire Holy Scriptures, containing all the canonical books of the Old and New Testament. By order of His Majesty the States General of the United Netherlands [...] - Leiden, Widow and Heirs Johan. Elzevier, 1663 - first and only edition - Old Testament + New Testament + Apocrypha - (42) + 469 + (26) + 167 + (4) + 78 pp. - calf leather binding with blind-embossing on oak boards (line borders, floral motifs and medallions), equipped with 8 brass cornerpieces and part of 2 brass clasps: spine with ribs - 46 x 30 x 12 cm (!) so-called ELEPHANT FOLIO size Condition: very good - very neat binding with very solid joints and very neat, complete spine (!); clasps lacking clamping tabs, very neat, compact and sturdy block, very neat, very fresh and very white pages! (small bite from title page, a few tiny spots, see photos, many paper repairs in lower corner with strips of paper, portion of Psalms to Ezekiel in lower corner damaged due to rubbing by sleeves of the pastor’s toga on the pulpit: the so-called pulpit sickness), otherwise virtually no stains or marks: strikingly neat, very clean and very white paper!). Complete. Provided with 4 maps with original margins by Nicolaes Visscher: - World Chart ('Orbis Terrarum') - The Situation of Paradise - Forty-Year Journey - Jerusalem The maps are very detailed, sharp and dark prints. Real works of art! At the moment the 'World Chart' was published, the whole world was not yet explored and known. Thus California was drawn as an island, Australia still partly undiscovered and labeled as 'Nieuw-Holland'! Just the world map alone is fascinating! This World map alone is sold in trade for about 700-900 euros! A single and first edition of this particularly Bible edition. Apart from the pulpit sickness, strikingly neat, very clean and very white paper! A so-called 'Elzevier Bible' and sought after because it is the first Dutch Bible edition in easily readable Roman type (instead of the Gothic type common at the time). Speaking of innovation... This edition has a particularly stylish typography. With beautifully decorated capitals and ornaments. A valuable and precious Bible. Very large and heavy book in so-called ELEPHANT FOLIO: 46 x 30 x 12 cm (!) Special origin: this state Bible has stood for centuries on the pulpit of the Reformed church in Heerewaarden. Hence this pulpit Bible bears the so-called pulpit sickness. Background information Reformed Church Heerewaarden: History: In 997 Heerewaarden was donated by Emperor Otto III to Notger, bishop of Liege. A church was established at Heerewaarden, but earlier there may have been a monastery as well. With the introduction of the Reformation, occurring after the recapture of Fort Sint-Andries and Heerewaarden by the States, the local pastor, Jan Aertsen Wonder, played a role. He converted to Calvinist religion around 1600, perhaps earlier, together with a large part of his parishioners. He became a pastor and remained so until 1615. The old church was destroyed by disturbances. Therefore a new church was built around 1605. In the first half of the 19th century it fell into ruin. There were also complaints about the adverse emissions of summer in the church due to burials that still took place there. In 1849 a new church was built, with bricks from the local brickworks, named Ambrosius. The church was put into use in 1850. Building It is a brick hall church with Neogothic and Neoclassical influences. There is a square brick bell tower, flanked by a recessed gable and crowned with an eight-sided tapered spire. The church possesses a pulpit from 1738 in Louis XIV style. The organ is from 1897 and was built by the Arnhem firm Leichel & Zn. Collector's item!
