Mertens Press, 1863, 340 pp. One volume in 12mo (160x100 mm), half morocco with corners, spine with raised bands, title piece in black morocco (binding of the period signed Dunezat). Fine binding condition. Interior fresh, very sparse light foxing. A volume containing two very small-number nineteenth-century reissues (100 copies) of two works by Nicolas Cholières dating respectively to 1585 and 1587. The Nine Matins of the Lord of Cholières is one of the two copies printed on Chinese paper; The Nine Matins is a collection of facetious dialogues and dissertations belonging to Renaissance humanist literature. Inspired by the spirit of François Rabelais, the work blends erudition, humor and moral reflection through nine discussions devoted to various subjects. The After Dinners is one of the four copies printed on Chinese paper. The After Dinners is a collection of dialogues, narratives and reflections belonging to the facetious and moral Renaissance French literature. Following The Nine Matinées (1585), the work sits in the tradition of “table talk” and collections of erudite conversations, mixing anecdotes, observations on manners, and philosophical discussions.
